Mangrove snappers didn't really show up
this year. Normally we catch some
er nice 5 to 7 lbers, but not htis season. I haven't seen anyone in the passes catching many snapper this year. The fishing in the passes is usually pretty hot by August and even sooner on offshore wrecks and structures. The redfish has been on and off with a few nice keepers so far. Snook are around and can be caught with the right tackle, technique and bait. Trolling for inshore grouper has been slower than in past years. Again they didn't appear to come into the passes this year and reports from offshore have not been verry good for gag grouper this year. Red grouper sare caught more often this season. Big Largemouth Bass are feeding up for the fall nesting season. The pre-spawning takes place at different times in different lakes and areas of Florida, so it may take some scouting around the lake to see if any beds are visible yet. Feeding will usually take place a few weeks before the nests show up in numbers. I like a big spinner bait or buzz bait. I like to let the lure settle to the bottom and sit there for a few minutes and then jerk it up off the bottom and let it sink back again. The strike always comes on the falling lure. fish early mornings on warm days and evenings on cooler days

fishing is getting better and should be
on fire soon. The report from Tim Kreock
is limits of red grouper in 60
feet out of redfish pass. The gags
offshore have been slow. Tim prefers the
Bomber CD 30 deep trolled lures in 30 to
60 ft of water. He just lets out some
more line to keep the lure as deep as
possible. Watch out for hang ups though
as these lures are expensive. $15.00
retail. We're always looking for a
less expensive alternative lure but
nothing so far gets down to the bottom,
makes as much noise or has as much
action as the Bomber cd30.

editor Roy Fuller recently spent several
evenings watching the local fishing
channels on TV to see which lures they
were recommending to catch big fish.
He went to the local Bass Pro Shops and
Dick's Sporting (we got one of each
recently, Yeah!) to purchase some of the
lures advertised and recommended by the
fishing guides on the shows. He mostly
focused on Redfish, Tarpon, Seatrout,
Snook, Grouper and Bass as these are
the fish species we currently do lure
evaluations on. Roy has been fished
the Southwest Florida waters for
twenty years as a avid fisherman and
wanted to use his techniques with
various different fishing lures
advertised for producing results. All the tackle he wanted
to purchase could not be completed at
one store so he had to visit several to
purchase all the items he saw
watching dozen's of local fishing shows
on catching local fish species. The
items included some Strike King's Tube
Lures, Strike King's Football Jig Heads,
Pro Cure Mullet Fishing Scent, Popping
Floaters (actually I have been using
these for many years and they work if
used properly) and a Rapalla
Trolling Lure that caught his fancy.
He usually has good luck fishing the ICW
this time of year for keeper Gag
Groupers. The plan was to hit the flats
with some of the newly advertised gator
trout fishing lures, scents and popping
floaters for big trout and then troll
the ICW (intercoastal waterways)

Editor's Lure Pick For - Big Largemouth Bass
I went fishing this weekend to test some of the lures we used in the 2011 Costa Rica Rainbow Bass lure evaluations to see how Florida Bass would react to them. My fishing outfit was already rigged with a rubber worm and my partner wanted to fish topwater so I gave the worm quiet a bit of effort before changing baits. My fishing partner had been using topwater plugs for about two hours and no bites at all. I switched over to one of the Stanley Lure Spinnerbaits that had caught a lot of rainbow bass during our last lure evaluation event. I couldn't believe it! I caught a 5 lb largemouth in less than a minute. My fishing partner felt it was only the location we had drifted into, but decided to change over to a rubber worm so he could fish the submerged tree limbs. That day I caught six nice bass on that same spinnerbait. My fishing partner didn't catch any. I went to Dick's Sports and purchased an arm load of the Stanley Wedge Spinnerbaits the next day. I contacted Stanley for the item number so our readers could order them directly online. You got to try these spinnerbaits!

- Bomber Cd Series
The Bomber CD series if the best grouper trolling lure I have used. It is certified to run at the marked depth with 60 ft of 20 lb mono or equivalent line. The lure has loud sounders inside making it one of the loudest lures in the water. The hooks are internally wired to prevent accidental hook lost. The Bomber Cd series has the best action of any of the lures we have tested. The side by side action on this lure is awesome. I also like the red eyes on the lure. Most lures come with green and black eyes. The only negative we could find with the lure is the paint tends to wear off quickly. This is not a problem for me as I'm always painting and touching up my lures. Also the first thing I do to a new lure is scuff up the paint job with sandpaper. Fishing Questions To The Editor Question - Hello, I've been a fishing guide now for over 20 years and I would like to know how I could catch grouper on lures in 60 ft of water?
Answer -
To answer your question we
catch a lot of grouper (red's
usually) in 65 feet of water using
Bomber cd 30's in Gold or Cigar
colors. We have not had any success
with Blue and silver colors. Yellow
works sometimes as does pink. You
will have to let out about 300 ft of
line and use the new high tech fiber
lines. We use 40 to 80 lb test and
it's the size of 12 to 15 lb test.
That helps the lure get deeper. Also
the slower you troll the deeper it
goes and also be sure to troll with
the tide, not against. This will
make the lure go it's maximum depth.
Another option is to use a
planner or down rigger set up to get
the lure down to 60 ft. This is a
very effective setup where the
bottom is a constant depth and there
is not to much grass around to foul
the plug. Mann also makes a 40 ft
diving lure that would make it even
easier to troll 60 ft of water. But
they are fairly expensive to
purchase.
Another recent lure we evaluated was the Hogy Flounder imitation lure rigged on a Hogy Drop Rig. I still can't believe the action we got on the Hogy Flounder and Hogy Jigging 10 inch Baits. Check out the grouper catching action.

catch grouper on soft baits like
Hogy's Flounder series and the 10
Jigging series of extra soft plastic
baits. This is the first soft bait
we have evaluated for grouper bottom
digging and we will be posting new
soft bait lure reviews in the near

months. For now try the Hogy
flounder lure while bottom jigging
for grouper and let me know how you
