Lake Arenal Evaluations -
Wow! The 2011 Rainbow Bass lure evaluations were a huge success in Lake Arenal, Costa Rica and
some
local fishing guides.
We had an almost unbelievable fishing tackle
accident while in Costa Rica just prior to our first day of fishing. We
had put our tackle boxes with all the lures we had purchased out of the
taxi to the ground behind the van. We carried the rods and some other
things to the Hotel and when we came back the taxi had backed over the
lure boxes, so we were devastated. We had to sift through the broken
pieces to find lures that were not damaged. Luckily I had purchased a
couple of Stanley Spinnerbaits the day before our departure and had
packed them separately. They were not in the totally destroyed lure
boxes. So many of the lures we had custom ordered for the fishing event
were lost before we were able to fish them.
Although the outcome was not exactly what we
were expecting at Lures That Catch Fish regarding the lure that caught
the most rainbow bass, I will definitely be bringing more
Stanley Spinnerbait back to
Lake Arenal for the next 2011 Lake Arenal Rainbow Bass lure evaluations.
Glenn's secret weapon, as he calls it also caught rainbow bass
consistently. . The
name was not on the lure either so we will have to do some homework to
provide our readers the name of the lure. It's called a BOMBER
Crank Bait... the XB10 BREAM. Thanks to
our readers for helping identifying this lure. The link

Other winners with Lures That Catch
Fish were Stanley Spinnerbaits, Strike King, Norman and Bomber deep
diving plugs. We will provide a link on the
RESULTS
page where these lures can purchase online from the manufacturer.
Stanley Lures came out the
Spinnerbait winner. Most of the fish we caught on the fishing trip
were caught
on a Stanley spinnerbait with Gold Blades, just as our fishing
guide Glenn had predicted. Stanley Lures is one of the few lure
manufacturers that offers spinnerbaits with Gold Blades on the shelf at
Bass Pro Shops. We fished everything from red and black,
green, green and white, purple, and blue skirts but nothing but white
skirts with gold blades would catch fish. Unfortunately none of these
lures were available at any of the local stores in Costa Rica or the
United States. We had to custom order these lures online from Cabalas
and Bass Pro Shops. We visited the local hardware store in Nuevo Arenal
and they did have one of the Strike King and Norman lures in a different
color in stock. The price was around $15 US dollars. The fish were caught
first thing in the morning and right before sunset in the evenings just
as our guide instructed it would be. All the fish we caught on crank
baits were during the hottest time of day when the fish head offshore to
match their inshore morning thermoclines.
BOOHAY, Persuader, Mann's, Lazer Eye
and Terminator spinnerbaits accounted for a few rainbow bass catches,
but I'm sure glad I picked up a couple Stanley Spinnerbaits before
leaving the States.

We fished spinnerbaits late in the evening

Several times during the
hot afternoon sun we took a dip in Lake Arenal
to cool off. The waters of Lake Arenal are very
refreshing and have a large mineral content from
the nearby Arenal volcano. It was like a cool
(76 degree) mineral spring bath. Beware though
as there are Crocodile warning posted on the
lake now. Apparently a local was raising some
and turned them lose in the lake. Glenn's boat
has a swing down ladder making frequent swims
possible. |

We trolled
crankbaits for several hours before hitting our
first Rainbow Bass with crankbaits in Lake Arenal. The bass
appear to only hang out in certain areas of the
lake. We trolled by the shoreline, out in the
middle and at time long trolling runs for miles
without getting a bite. Almost all our fish came
from the same general location on the lake for
both trolling and spinnerbaits. All the more
reason to hire a competent fishing guide when
fishing Lake Arenal. |

Our bi-lingual fishing tour guide on this Lake Arenal
fishing event points out why the Guapote Rainbow Bass
are so difficult to catch. Like the Florida Grouper,
they bury their heads in the limbs and submerged
branches when hooked. We had to circle around
above this rainbow bass for quite some time trying to
retrieve him from the undergrowth. We could see
the rainbow bass tangled up on the bottom about 15 feet
below us with the deep diver lure in his mouth.

We had five persons show
up to participate for the Lures That Catch Fish Rainbow
Bass Event on Lake Arenal, Costa Rica in 2011.
We knew the weather may be uncooperative this time of
the year and we were not disappointed. We only had a
couple of sunny fishing days during the entire three
week period. The rest of the mornings and
afternoons met us with thick fog and constant rain. The
temperature was very nice though in the high 60 to 70
degrees. We threw spinnerbaits all mornings, trolled
deep diving crank baits during the middle of the days
and went back to spinnerbaits in the evenings until
dark. It was great to step out on the front or back
casting platforms of Glenn's boat with rain parkas on
and cast away knowing we could take a couple steps to
the central bimini covered area of the boat, take a nice
comfortable seat and have a hot cup of coffee, soda or a
beer. |
